In the premiere episode of Campfire Tales we discuss the Dyatlov Pass Incident. In 1959 a group of 9 hikers went missing in the Ural Mountains. once they were found, their deaths would be surrounded by one of the biggest mysteries ever.
Igor Dyatlov was easily the most experienced hiker of the group. Not only an experienced hiker, Dyatlov was also an inventor and had created a portable radio and portable stove meant for hikers.
Aleksander Kolevatov was a student of Nuclear Physics and had transferred from Moscow to Sverdlovsk to continue his studies after working in the secret institute of the Ministry of Medium Machine Building. He would celebrate his 24th birthday on January 30th, just days before the incident.
Aleksandr Zolotaryov was a hiking instructor and World War 2 veteran. The only one that was not affiliated with the Institute, he joined the team to gain the final experience needed in order to reach the rank of Master Instructor. He would celebrate his 38th birthday on the day of his death.
Yuri Krivonischenko was a 23 year old student of Construction and Hydraulics. He was known for playing the mandolin and being a pretty light hearted and funny man.
Ludmila Dubinina was 20 years old. The youngest of the group, she was studying economics and was a dedicated comm you nist. She was known as a natural leader by many. A week before the trip, she had just moved to a new apartment with her family.
Nikolay Thibeaux-Brignolle was 23 years old. He graduated with a Major in Civil Engineering in 1958. He was known for looking out for others and taking care of hikers during trips. He promised his parents this would be his last expedition.
Rustem Slobodin was 23 years old. Also a graduate from Ural Polytechnic Institute, he was a long distance runner and had a lot of experience hiking long and treacherous distances.
Yuri Doroshenko was 21 years old. He was a radio engineering student who had previously been in a relationship with one of the hikers named Zina Kolmogorova. Yuri had once scared off a Brown Bear with only a geologist hammer in order to protect Zina. Zina said that this was the moment she fell in love with him.
Zina Kolmogorova was 22 years old. She was also a radio engineering student. She was known for being outgoing and friendly. There was rumor that she was dating Igor Dyatlov but this was never confirmed.
Yuri Yurdin, otherwise known as the sole survivor, was 21 years old at the time of the expedition. Yuri was an economics student with health ailments. These health ailments would lead to him leaving early due to joint and knee pain.
